When to take maternity photos

One of the first things my clients ask is when they should take their maternity photos.  The simple answer is 30-36 weeks.  It’s important to remember though, that it takes time to plan your session.  Also, because the window is only a month, you’ll want to book sooner rather than later. Now, wouldn’t it be nice to own the spotlight before your life makes a 360-degree turn? Well, you can do exactly that by having your maternity photos professionally taken before bub arrives. A maternity photo session is a great way to document your journey into motherhood. It can capture your story, experiences, and where you are now. Through your maternity photos, you can show how incredible your body is and what it is capable of. More importantly, these photos capture such a special moment in your life, allowing you to look back and enjoy them in the future. This is where I can help you.

When to book maternity photos when expecting twins or triplets

Another exception is if you are expecting twins or triplets. If this is the case with you, I suggest you schedule your maternity photo shoot earlier. If you’re left pondering about what week to get your maternity photos taken, I suggest around your second trimester or at 20-24 weeks of pregnancy. This is because your baby bump will be well established by your second trimester if you are carrying more than one baby. You will generally also still be feeling good and comfortable, and can still freely move around. Generally most multiple pregnancies will deliver earlier so you should also consider that when booking your photo shoot.

High-risk Pregnancies

Some pregnancies come with some complications. In case of any medical issues or emergencies, you will have to move the timeline of your photo session further up if you are pregnant with a high-risk baby. This could also put restrictions on things like where the maternity photos are taken. Consult your doctor before taking any action as you may have to reschedule your plans in light of their advice.

What to Wear for Maternity Photos?

The color of your clothes and your style will greatly impact how you feel during the photo shoot and how your photos come out. If you are going in a studio maternity session, bring at least 2-3 outfits so that you can capture different looks.

These outfits could range from casual to formal ones for more versatility. Some good outfit ideas are:

  • Body-con dresses that highlight the shape of your bump
  • Empire line dresses
  • Lingerie or lace dresses
  • Lingerie with an open-buttoned shirt
  • Bandeau tops or cropped tops with normal jeans (unbuttoned)
  • A bandeau top with a flowing maxi skirt

As for the color palette, go with simple colors that create maximum impact and also complement your skin tone. Some good options include white, all-black or cream colored outfits. Avoid patterns or anything with complex embroidery as this could take the focus away from what you want to highlight.

Tips about pregnancy photos
  • Avoid wearing large and distracting patterns.
  • Use natural light instead of flash.
  • Make sure your belly is moisturized.
  • Avoid busy or complex backgrounds or monotonous backgrounds.
  • Only take direct photos if the child is hit in the stomach.
Conclusion

Pregnancy is one of the most beautiful phases of life, and recording good and ideal images of this beautiful and attractive period depends strongly on choosing the right time for pregnancy photography. Pregnancy photography is attractive and memorable because you see how your family changes over time and a greater sense of motherhood grows in you before the baby is born.
